ISLAMABAD: The leaders and the workers of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on Monday vowed to complete the mission of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto (ZAB), reinforce democracy and push back the bits and pieces of the martial law regimes.

The party workers gathered at a function at the President House here to observe July 5 as a black day as on this day in 1977 General Zia-ul-Haq through a military takeover, removed the democratically elected government of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.

Presiding over the function, the president of the PPP Women’s Wing, Faryal Talpur said that her party is proud of its workers who went to the prisons and faced lashes but remained devoted to the leadership. She paid tributes to the workers for their life long struggle, endurance, commitment and unanimity. She said that the People’s Party remained victorious due to sacrifices of its workers and leaders. Workers are the asset of the party and their services would be recognized by giving them due significance, she added.

Madame Faryal Talpur said that the PPP is moving ahead by pursuing the policy of reconciliation. She agreed to the proposal that study circles should be shaped so that the new age group can know about Shaheed Bhutto’s philosophy and life and struggle of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.

PPP’s Secretary General Jahangir Badar said that the party’s struggle spanned over forty years and it was ongoing from generation to generation. He said that the party would be organized and services of workers would be acknowledged. Speaking on the occasion, Shahida Jabeen, who remained in jail in the early days of the martial law, said that when the government of Shaheed Zulfiqar Bhutto was ousted in 1977, the working classes resisted the martial law government.

She said that she courted arrest along with 11 other women at the Committee Chowk in Rawalpindi. She recalled that how a worker namely Abdul Waheed Qureshi put himself on fire to demonstrate against the martial law.
